Concrete is one of the most durable surfaces—but over time, dirt, stains, algae, and weather can make it look tired. At Pinnacle Pressure Washing in Sacramento, we know that a deep clean can transform concrete back to its original, fresh appearance.
In this post, we explain what makes concrete look new again and answer questions we hear people asking quite a bit, like whether common household products like OxiClean or Dawn can clean concrete well.
The Secret to Restoring Concrete
We’ll be straight with you: We’ve seen a lot of nasty concrete. Before we got into pressure washing, we had no idea people chewed that much gum and spit it out in public! But we’ve yet to encounter concrete we couldn’t thoroughly clean.
What’s the secret?
Power Washing Removes Built-Up Grime
Every day, concrete surfaces collect dirt, grease, and even biological growth like moss or algae. High-pressure washing blasts away this buildup, revealing the original color and texture beneath. This not only improves curb appeal but also prepares the surface for further treatment if needed.
Resurfacing and Densifying
Sometimes concrete looks dull or stained even after cleaning. In these cases, resurfacing treatments or densifiers can be used. These products penetrate the concrete and fill in tiny pores and cracks. As a result, the surface appears smoother, denser, and more uniform in color. A proper sealant afterward protects the concrete from future wear and tear.
Regular Maintenance and Sealing
After restoring your concrete, applying a sealant or stain can preserve its fresh look. Sealants protect against water, dirt, and chemicals. Regular maintenance—such as periodic pressure washing—helps keep the surface looking new for longer.
Can’t I Just Use Household Cleaners?
You probably have a cadre of various household cleaners under the kitchen sink or in the garage. They (probably) won’t hurt, right? While they could be worth a shot, your effectiveness may vary. Here are two examples we’re asked about a lot:
Can OxiClean Make Concrete Look New?
OxiClean is an oxygen-based bleach that lifts organic stains from concrete. It works well on grease, mildew, and even stubborn dirt. Many homeowners have had success using OxiClean to brighten up driveways, patios, and sidewalks.
A Word of Caution
Some folks who’ve used OxiClean have noted that when OxiClean is used on new pavers, it may remove a thin, natural haze left by polymeric sand. This haze can make a portion of your surface look “cleaner” than the rest if not applied uniformly.
In other words, while OxiClean can restore concrete, it’s important to use it consistently over the entire area. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for good results, and consider a professional evaluation if you’re unsure. For even better results, get a professional power-washed clean!
Does Dawn Work on Concrete?
Dawn dish soap is known for its grease-cutting power. When mixed with warm water, it creates a mild solution that can break down oil and grime without damaging the concrete. This makes it a popular choice for cleaning outdoor surfaces like patios.
Mix a squirt of Dawn with warm water and apply it with a scrub brush or mop. For a stronger clean, you can also try mixing in white vinegar. For tougher stains, you might need to spend a little extra time scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to avoid leaving any residue behind.
A Decent Choice for Lighter Cleaning Needs
Dawn is best for lighter cleaning tasks. Areas with heavy buildup will likely not see marked improvement with Dawn. Where does that leave us for heavier soiling? It might not be a bad idea to try power washing if your concrete is a little worse for the wear!
